Stress: To subject to physical or mental pressure, tension, or strain. A physical or psychological stimulus that can produce mental tension or physiological reactions that may lead to illness. (The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition, 2000).
Too much stress can be counter-productive. Never has there been a better time to introduce a De-stress Zone offering therapeutic massages, shampooing, barbering, manicures and pedicures - where participants can melt all that stress away, and enjoy a richer, fuller, and more rewarding life.
De-Stress Zone was conceived out of the shared experiences of fellow students, lectures and workers on the UTECH campus.
Most students operate in a high-stress environment in trying to meet project deadlines, studying for examinations, and in general, just struggling to keep up with all the campus activities. It is especially demanding on part-time or evening students who have to work and attend school. Some even have to fit in family commitments into their daily schedules.
Lecturers also have their fair share of stress in trying to stay on top of their game in preparing lecture materials on time and marking test papers, while balancing other tasks. Some lecturers even run multiple sessions in multiple subjects on a daily basis. In the past year, at least one lecturer in one faculty (Engineering and Computing) had been hospitalized as a direct result of the work pressure placed on that individual.
Other campus workers – from academic (office) staff to ancillary staff seem to be always burning the candle at both ends.
It was concluded therefore, that there is an overwhelming need for a De-Stress Zone on campus. The benefits of such a service are numerous to all concerned. Although our focus is on wellness and customer satisfaction, it is worth mentioning that De-Stress Zone is a viable business venture also.
